Hisakazu Katoh joined NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) in 1982. He has been engaged in research and development on digital broadcasting system and IP network system in NHK Science and Technology Research Laboratories and NHK Engineering Department.
In 2010, he proposed a new broaddcast and broadband integration system, Hybridcast, and was in charge of development, standadization and promotion of the system. Hybridcast enhances broadcast service on TV with web tehcnology accompanied with portable devices, introduces HTML5, state-of-the-art browser technology.
From 2012, he moved to NHK's Media Planning Bureau to launch actual Hybridcast services. Hybridcast was started in September 2013 by NHK. Currently, more than one million Hybridcast ready TV sets are in the market, and some commercial broacastes start their own Hybridcast service in Japan.
