Dr. Shapiro recently retired from his position as Vice President, Research & Development, and Chief Technical Officer of TE SubCom. He has been involved in undersea cable R&D for the past 30 years. His initial work was in the area of mechanical design, where as the chief engineer he was responsible for the design, development, qualification and introduction to manufacture of submerged undersea cable, joints, couplings, and repeater hardware and electronics.
More recently, as CTO, he has been instrumental in leading TE SubCom through the development of the first and second generations of coherent transmission technology. He has also been influential in advancing TE SubCom’s efforts in the oil, gas and scientific areas, including forward looking research work and undersea transmission design, as well as submerged plant and terminal equipment design and engineering.
Dr. Shapiro holds a BSME degree from the City College of New York and advanced degrees in Engineering from Columbia University.
