Wow, 8K TV!

Visually stunning! Join us as PTC’15 opens with an eye-popping demonstration of NHK’s “Super Hi-Vision” 8K TV system on an 85 inch screen.16 times more definition than HDTV. 22.2 surround sound 4 times more channels than current systems. 8K Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) uses 33 million pixels per frame with a data rate of about 144Gbps. It’s an innovation at the intersection of broadcasting and telecoms that has a multitude of implications for both in the coming years.

Network Implications of UHDTV

NHK anticipates a development process leading to the rollout nationwide of broadcast 8K in Japan by 2020. As with Netflix in the US, 4k has already started on the adoption path for broader distribution in several countries. Even with that, there are many challenges including network implications of the enormous data rates and file sizes of UHDTV. Distribution of both 4k and 8k TV will depend on other's networks as well including satellite, cable, wired and wireless, to function for its services and to reach customers. Capabilities for this largely do not exist today. What are the business strategies and content for these high-cost investments with much of the innovation for 8K still in prototype? With real world end-user connectivity issues, a need to evolve CDNs and bring up data center capabilities and exchanges as well, what will be the equations for broader use of UHDTV?
